Peregraf- The Kurdistan Region Court of Cassation in Erbil has formally requested the full investigative file of Lahur Sheikh Jangi and several of his associates, following a petition submitted by their defense team, marking a new development in the high-profile case.

Burhan Rashid Gula, the head of Jangi’s defense team, confirmed in a statement on his social media page that the request for the Court of Cassation’s intervention — including retrieval of the case documents — was made at their initiative.

In an official letter addressed to the Kurdistan Region Security Investigation Court, the Presidency of the Court of Cassation in Erbil requested the full case dossier related to the accused: Lahur Sheikh Jangi, Brian Wilson, Dilshad Abdullah Hama, Sharam Rafiq, Polad Jangi Burhan, and others.

The letter stated that the file is needed to proceed with the necessary legal review.

The case stems from violent clashes that erupted in Sulaymaniyah on August 22, after security forces attempted to execute an arrest warrant against Jangi at the Lalazar Hotel, his residence and main headquarters. Units from the Asayish, Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG), and Commando forces encircled the area, prompting armed resistance from Jangi’s loyalists, known as the Scorpion Force.

The confrontation included heavy gunfire and explosions that lasted over three hours, leaving five people dead, dozens wounded, and more than 100 individuals detained. The fighting caused significant damage to the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Jangi — a former co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) who formed the People’s Front after his political ouster in 2021 — eventually surrendered and was arrested alongside his brother Polad and several senior aides.

The Court of Cassation’s latest move marks a significant development in the high-profile case, which continues to draw wide public and political attention across the Kurdistan Region.
