Shia Coordination Framework Discusses Criteria for Next Iraqi Prime Minister, Welcomes Sunni Council Formation
Peregraf – The Shia Coordination Framework held its regular meeting on Monday at the office of Hadi al-Amiri, focusing on preparations for Iraq’s next political phase and the constitutional deadlines for forming a new government.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the leaders reviewed the “basic criteria and requirements” for selecting the next Iraqi prime minister, stressing that any nominee must meet “clear national standards” including competence, integrity, and the ability to manage the state and navigate the challenges ahead. The mechanism for choosing the candidate within the Framework was also a key point of discussion.
The attendees received reports from the two leadership committees formed in the previous session. The committees were tasked with assessing potential candidates and reviewing national entitlements, and the Framework agreed that their work should continue until final recommendations are completed.
In a notable political development, the Coordination Framework congratulated the establishment of the National Political Council by Sunni political forces, describing it as a “positive indicator” that could strengthen organized political action and unify national visions. The Shia alliance reiterated its commitment to constitutional timelines for forming the next government, asserting that political stability and respect for voters’ choices remain priorities.
The Coordination Framework — which brings together several Shia blocs and controls more than 170 seats — officially registered itself on November 20 as the largest parliamentary bloc. This designation, required by Iraqi law, grants it the sole right to nominate the next prime minister.
Current Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani is seeking a second term, while other names circulating in Iraqi media include Hamid al-Shatri, head of the Iraqi Intelligence Service. However, the Framework has not yet settled on a final candidate, and internal consultations are expected to continue in the coming days.
