KRG: Gas Exports to Power Stations Halted After Drone Attack on Khor Mor

Peregraf – The Kurdistan Region’s Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity announced late Wednesday that gas exports to power stations were completely halted at 11:30 p.m. following a drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field.

In a joint statement, the ministries said they are in direct contact with Dana Gas, the operator of Khor Mor, to assess the impact of the attack and work to restore normal operations.

“We inform the citizens of the Kurdistan Region that the export of gas to the power stations was completely halted tonight at 11:30 PM due to a drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field,” the statement read. Technical teams from both ministries are coordinating with Dana Gas “to follow up on the consequences of the incident and normalize the situation.”

Khor Mor is the largest gas field in the Kurdistan Region and a critical pillar of the Region’s energy security. Dana Gas, which operates the field, recently secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to expand and enhance gas production.

The field has come under repeated drone and missile attacks over the past two years, with no official disclosure of the perpetrators or motives. One of the deadliest incidents occurred on April 26, 2024, when two drones struck the site, killing four Yemeni workers.

Khor Mor supplies natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian—among the main sources of electricity generation for the Region—and also provides gas for household use. The shutdown of gas exports following tonight’s attack is expected to affect electricity production across the Kurdistan Region.
