Peregraf – The Iraqi Security Media Cell condemned an attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah Governorate late Wednesday night, describing it as a “treacherous” and “dangerous terrorist act” that threatens Iraqi interests and obstructs efforts to maintain security and economic stability. The incident, which occurred at 11:30 p.m., caused a fire in one of the main tanks at the field, but no human casualties were reported.
In its statement, the Security Media Cell warned that the parties behind the attack would face “decisive legal measures” and “just punishment.” The statement also highlighted the negative impact of the assault on Iraq’s electricity system, particularly in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, and the broader consequences for the country’s energy resources.
Earlier, the Kurdistan Region’s Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity confirmed that gas exports to power stations were completely halted following the attack. In a joint statement, the ministries said they are coordinating with Dana Gas, the field’s operator, to assess the situation and restore normal operations.
“We inform the citizens of the Kurdistan Region that the export of gas to the power stations was completely halted tonight at 11:30 PM due to a drone attack on the Khor Mor gas field,” the statement said. Technical teams from both ministries are working with Dana Gas “to follow up on the consequences of the incident and normalize the situation.”
Khor Mor, the largest gas field in the Kurdistan Region, is a critical pillar of the Region’s energy security. Dana Gas recently secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to expand and enhance gas production at the field.
The field has faced repeated drone and missile attacks over the past two years, with the perpetrators and motives remaining officially undisclosed. A deadly attack on April 26, 2024, killed four Yemeni workers after two drones struck the site.
Khor Mor supplies natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian, which are among the main sources of electricity in the Region, as well as providing gas for households. The halt of gas exports following Wednesday night’s attack is expected to cause disruptions in electricity production across the Kurdistan Region.
