KRG PM Calls for Justice and U.S. Defensive Support After Khor Mor Gas Field Attack
Peregraf – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani condemned the late Wednesday attack on the Khor Mor gas field, located in Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, urging the federal government to bring the perpetrators to justice and calling on the United States and international partners to provide defensive equipment to protect civilian infrastructure.
In a statement posted on X, Barzani described the strike as a “cowardly attack” on the Region’s largest gas field and warned that “the usual terrorists or whoever may be behind tonight’s attacks cannot be allowed to repeat these crimes or be released on bail, as in the past.”
He emphasized the need for international support to strengthen the Region’s ability to deter attacks that threaten both the safety of the population and Kurdistan’s economic development.
The strike forced a halt in gas exports from Khor Mor, disrupting electricity supply to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Sulaymaniyah. Khor Mor has been repeatedly targeted in recent years, including a deadly drone strike in April 2024 that killed four workers. Barzani’s appeal highlights the urgent need to protect vital energy infrastructure and maintain stability across the Region.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell also condemned the attack, describing it as a “treacherous” and “dangerous terrorist act” that threatens Iraqi interests and obstructs efforts to maintain security and economic stability. The attack caused a fire in one of the main tanks at Khor Mor, but no human casualties were reported. The Security Media Cell warned that the perpetrators will face “decisive legal measures” and “just punishment” and highlighted the negative effects of the attack on Iraq’s electricity system and energy resources.
Khor Mor, the largest gas field in the Kurdistan Region, supplies natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian, as well as household gas. Dana Gas, which operates the field, recently secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to expand production. The shutdown of gas exports following the attack is expected to disrupt electricity generation across the Kurdistan Region.
