Peregraf – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani strongly condemned the overnight “terrorist attack” on the Khor Mor gas field, calling it a direct assault on Iraq’s economic infrastructure and a serious threat to the country’s security and stability.

In a statement on Thursday, President Barzani said the strike targeted vital public services in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, describing the incident as an unacceptable escalation against critical national assets.

“It is the duty and responsibility of the Iraqi Federal Government and the relevant security institutions to immediately make serious efforts and take the necessary and effective measures to hold the perpetrators of this crime accountable, punish them, and prevent its recurrence,” he said.

Barzani urged Baghdad to take decisive action to stop repeated attacks on energy infrastructure, warning that such incidents undermine stability and endanger the population’s welfare.

The attack is the latest in a series of assaults on energy facilities.

Last night’s strike caused a fire in one of the main tanks at Khor Mor after the site was hit around 11:30 p.m., according to the Iraqi Security Media Cell, which described the incident as a “treacherous and dangerous terrorist act.” While no casualties were reported, gas exports were halted, disrupting electricity supply to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Sulaymaniyah.

Khor Mor, operated by Pearl Petroleum, is the largest gas field in the Kurdistan Region and a key source of fuel for power generation. The field has been repeatedly targeted over the past two years, including a deadly drone attack in April 2024 that killed four workers.
