Peregraf – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has strongly condemned the attack on the Khor Mor gas field, calling it “an attack on all of Iraq.”
Barzani stated that during a phone call after the strike, he and Sudani agreed to form a joint investigative committee to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
The Khor Mor gas field, located in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, is the largest in the Kurdistan Region and a key supplier of natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian. The field is operated by Dana Gas, which recently secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to expand production.
The attack late Wednesday night forced gas exports to be halted at 11:30 p.m., causing disruptions in electricity generation across the Kurdistan Region. According to security authorities, the strike ignited a fire in one of the main tanks but caused no human casualties.
Khor Mor has been repeatedly targeted by drone and missile attacks over the past two years. One of the deadliest incidents occurred on April 26, 2024, when two drones struck the site, killing four Yemeni workers. The motives and perpetrators behind the recurring attacks remain officially undisclosed.
