U.S. Condemns 'Terrorist' Attack on Khor Mor, Signals Support for Protecting Iraqi Kurdistan
Peregraf – The United States strongly condemned the Wednesday night "terrorist attack" on the Khor Mor gas field in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, warning that repeated assaults by armed groups threaten Iraq’s stability and the safety of American investments in the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement on Thursday, the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil said the attack was “the latest in a spate of attempts by malign actors to undermine Iraq’s stability and to target American investments in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”
The Consulate called on the Iraqi federal government to take “immediate action” to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Highlighting Washington’s readiness to assist, the statement emphasized: “We are prepared to lend support to efforts to protect this critical infrastructure.”
It reiterated that Iraq must assert full sovereignty by ensuring that all weapons—particularly drones, missiles, and rockets—are brought under state control.
The attack, which occurred at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday (November 26, 2025 ), forced a halt in gas exports from Khor Mor and triggered power disruptions in the enitre provinces of Kurdistan Region; Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Halabja and Duhok. Khor Mor, operated by Dana Gas, is the Kurdistan Region’s largest gas field and a key supplier of fuel to regional power plants. The site has been repeatedly targeted by drone and missile attacks over the past two years, including a deadly strike in April 2024 that killed four workers.
Savaya: "Armed Groups With Foreign Agendas Behind the Attack"
Adding to Washington’s response, Mark Savaya, the U.S. President’s Special Envoy to Iraq, said that “armed groups operating illegally and driven by hostile foreign agendas” were responsible for the latest assault on Khor Mor.
Savaya urged the Iraqi government to take decisive action: “The Government of Iraq must identify those responsible for this assault and bring them to justice. Let it be unequivocal: there is no place for such armed groups in a fully sovereign Iraq.”
He stressed that the United States would fully support Baghdad in confronting these groups: “Every illegal armed group and supporter will be tracked, confronted, and held accountable.”
Savaya reaffirmed U.S. backing for the Kurdistan Region within a unified Iraq, calling for enhanced coordination to protect key energy assets.
“We encourage Baghdad and Erbil to deepen their security cooperation and work closely to safeguard vital economic and energy infrastructure.”
The envoy also reiterated Washington’s long-term commitment to strengthening Iraqi defense capabilities to ensure the security of all citizens and the protection of national resources.
The latest attack underscores the increasing danger facing critical energy infrastructure across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, as well as the heightened urgency for joint security action to curb the activities of Iraqi and Kurdish armed groups operating outside state authority.
