Peregraf – A young man was killed on Saturday when security forces opened fire during a protest outside the Lanaz Refinery, north of Erbil, escalating tensions between local residents and the authorities.

The demonstration was organized by residents of Lajan village, located near the refinery. Villagers gathered to demand that job opportunities at the refinery be provided to young people from their area, arguing that despite living closest to the site, they are consistently overlooked in hiring.

A witness who recorded the fatal moment on video said the young man was shot by Lanaz Asayish (security forces). “He was killed by the shooting of Lanaz Asayish,” the witness stated.

Sources indicate the confrontation broke out after protesters insisted on speaking directly with refinery management. Security units deployed around the facility attempted to disperse the crowd, leading to the use of live fire.

Authorities in Erbil have yet to issue an official statement, while residents warn of rising anger if their demands are ignored.

Peregraf will publish further updates as more information emerges.
