KRG Premier Announces Restart of Gas Production After Terror Attack, Calls for Full Accountability
Peregraf - Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday thanked the people of Kurdistan for their patience and resilience following the recent terror attack on the Kurdistan Region’s gas infrastructure, which caused widespread electricity outages across both the Kurdistan Region and parts of Iraq.
In a strongly worded statement, Barzani said the attack on the Khor Mor gas field was “an attack against every citizen,” cutting power to millions and exposing the scale of sabotage targeting vital public services.
Barzani announced that the KRG has reached an agreement with Dana Gas to restart production “in the next several hours” to restore electricity supplies. The premier said he personally spoke with the company’s leadership to thank them and their workforce for their “extraordinary resilience and determination” amid eleven attacks on the field.
He stressed that the Kurdistan Regional Government, in coordination with the federal government in Baghdad, will work to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent further attacks. He added that efforts are also underway with international partners to secure the necessary capabilities to protect the Region’s people and critical infrastructure.
“This incident cannot be allowed to pass without public accountability. It cannot become the norm,” Barzani warned.
Without naming them, the KRG Prime Minister accused the adversaries behind the attack of seeking to undermine the Kurdistan Region’s progress, resorting to “cowardly, inhumane acts” that plunged the public into darkness. He said their actions reflected an inability to accept the Kurdistan Region’s development and well-being.
Barzani said he urged Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice “to the full extent of the law, whoever they may be and wherever they are,” noting that true deterrence is essential for restoring investor confidence.
“Iraq cannot attract investment when militias, mafias, the corrupt, and armed groups outside state control willingly bomb national infrastructure at zero cost,” Barzani said, condemning individuals and groups who celebrated the attack.
He expressed gratitude to technical teams from the KRG Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity, as well as the security services, for their efforts at the site over recent days.
Barzani reaffirmed that the KRG will not be deterred by such attacks: “We will continue our journey for progress and prosperity, and I urge 'the public' to continue to support the government’s efforts and agenda.”
