Peregraf — Iraqi Speaker of Parliament announced that next Tuesday has been scheduled as the parliamentary session to elect the President of the Republic.

The Speaker said the move comes as part of ongoing efforts to complete constitutional requirements and advance the political process. The session is expected to bring together lawmakers to vote on the next president, a key step toward forming a new government.

Under the constitution, the election of a president paves the way for nominating a prime minister and completing the government formation process.

Iraq’s Coordination Framework announced it has nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as its candidate for prime minister, following an expanded leadership meeting held Saturday at the office of Hadi al-Amiri.

The bloc said the decision was approved by a majority vote, citing al-Maliki’s political and administrative experience, and reaffirmed its commitment to the constitutional process.

The Coordination Framework also called on parliament to convene a session to elect the President of the Republic in line with constitutional deadlines.
