Peregraf — According to the official Iraqi newspaper Al-Sabah, Head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki said today that he remains committed to the will of the Iraqi people and their right to choose their leaders through constitutional institutions, stressing that the selection of the country’s government is a sovereign national matter.

The Coordination Framework is scheduled to hold a meeting this evening to discuss the issue of al-Maliki’s continuation as a candidate or a possible withdrawal, amid internal political deliberations following U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejection of his potential return to office.

Al-Maliki stated that respecting democracy, the constitutional process, and the people’s right to determine their political system represents a firm principle, adding that he will continue to adhere to this approach without retreat.

Trump recently warned against al-Maliki’s return to power, threatening to withdraw U.S. support for Iraq and criticizing his previous term in office, remarks that have intensified controversy surrounding the nomination.
