Peregraf — Head of the National State Powers Alliance, part of Iraq’s Coordination Framework, Ammar al-Hakim on Tuesday expressed deep regret over a tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump rejecting the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for prime minister, while stressing the need to uphold constitutional timelines and prioritize Iraq’s national interests.

In a statement, al-Hakim emphasized “the importance of adhering to constitutional timings,” calling for the election of the President of the Republic and the pursuit of appropriate solutions to the current political impasse. He voiced his “deep regret over the tweet issued against the Coordination Framework’s candidate,” warning that Iraq could face significant economic consequences as a result of escalating tensions.

Despite this warning, al-Hakim said he appreciates and takes pride in approaches that preserve Iraq’s sovereignty, stressing the necessity of placing the interests of the nation and its people above all else. He described this approach as “the height of courage and responsibility.”

Al-Hakim further clarified that the Hikma National Movement does not operate on the basis of opposition, obstruction, or political pressure. Instead, he said, its position is rooted in the choice of participation or non-participation in the political process, based on a firm conviction that public interest must prevail over private or partisan interests.

His remarks come as Head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki reaffirmed today that he remains committed to the will of the Iraqi people and their right to choose their leaders through constitutional institutions. Al-Maliki stressed that the selection of Iraq’s government is a sovereign national matter.

Al-Maliki added that respect for democracy, the constitutional process, and the people’s right to determine their political system represents a firm principle from which he will not retreat.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently warned against al-Maliki’s return to power, threatening to withdraw U.S. support for Iraq and sharply criticizing al-Maliki’s previous term in office. Trump’s remarks have intensified controversy surrounding the nomination and deepened debate within Iraq’s political landscape as negotiations to form a new government continue.
