Peregraf - Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said the Kurds seek to govern their own region within Syria, responding to assertions by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Shaibani that Kurds have not officially requested autonomy.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Abdi said the issue revolves around terminology. "The Syrian state has an issue with specific concepts; however, we seek Kurdish regional governance, regardless of the label used," he said. "The priority is for Kurds to manage their own region."
Abdi confirmed that he participated in several meetings with international delegations during the conference, including discussions attended by the U.S. Secretary of State.
Regarding international support for Kurdish rights, Abdi said the discussions in Munich reflected a broad consensus. "There is widespread support for Kurds to obtain their rights, to protect the unique status of Kurdish areas, to ensure these regions are not targeted, and to allow Kurds to govern themselves," he stated.
These remarks come amid ongoing debates over Syria’s future political structure and the status of the Kurdish-led administration in the country’s northeast.
