Peregraf - Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met today with U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack to discuss ways to shield Iraq from potential regional repercussions amid ongoing tensions.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Iraq’s leadership is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Iraqi people and the country’s strategic gains. He stressed that protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and stability is essential not only for domestic security but also for maintaining balance across the region.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, Barrack conveyed U.S. President Donald Trump’s perspective on regional developments and highlighted Iraq’s critical role in promoting stability and economic growth in the Middle East. Both sides agreed that dialogue, diplomacy, and economic initiatives are key tools to prevent escalation and protect Iraq from fallout caused by regional crises.

Barrack Meets Maliki, Zaidan

Earlier in the day, Barrack also held separate meetings with Nouri al-Maliki and Faiq Zaidan in Baghdad, reflecting ongoing U.S. engagement with key Iraqi political and judicial figures.

During his meeting, Maliki called for full respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and the will of its people, stressing that the country’s political future should be determined internally without external interference. His remarks come amid ongoing debate over his potential return as prime minister.

Meanwhile, Zaidan’s discussions with Barrack focused on Iraq’s constitutional and political impasse, particularly the continued delay in electing a President of the Republic—a critical step required to move forward with government formation.

Iraq remains in a prolonged political deadlock, with disputes among major political forces blocking progress on both the presidency and premiership, raising concerns over continued delays in governance and reform.
