Six Drones and One Missile Strike Village in Kurdistan Region, One Komala Member Killed
Peregraf — A coordinated attack involving six drones and one missile targeted the village of Zirgwezala on Wednesday morning in the Kurdistan Region, killing one Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan peshmerga and injuring another, according to the Kurdistan Region Security Council.
Colonel Karzan Sherko, spokesperson for the security council, said the strike occurred at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11. The attack struck an area where members of Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan were present.
"The village of Zirgwezala was targeted this morning by six drones and one missile," Sherko said in a statement. "As a result of the attack, one member of Komala was killed and another was wounded."
The killed peshmerga was identified as Omid Weisi, also known by his field name Omid Rwanser. The condition of the wounded member has since stabilized, according to Komala.
In a statement, Komala attributed the attack directly to the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying the strike targeted one of its camps using several suicide drones. The organization said the attack would not deter its struggle, adding that such strikes reflect the Islamic Republic's fear and weakness rather than its strength.
Komala also noted that the Islamic Republic has repeatedly targeted its bases and headquarters in recent days in what it described as terrorist strikes.
The security council said an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the attack. No group has separately claimed responsibility.
Zirgwezala is a village in the Tanjaro district of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region, where Iranian Kurdish opposition groups have maintained bases for years. The area has periodically been targeted by drone and missile strikes amid regional tensions involving Iran and Kurdish opposition movements.
Security officials have not yet disclosed further technical details about the drones or the missile used in Wednesday's strike.
The incident comes amid an intensifying wave of drone and missile attacks across the Kurdistan Region in recent days. Security sources say more than 100 drones and missiles have targeted various locations across the region over the past week.
The attacks have been widely attributed either to Iran or to armed factions aligned with what is referred to as the "Islamic Resistance" — a network of Iran-backed groups operating inside Iraq. Many of the strikes have targeted areas near energy infrastructure and security installations, raising concerns about the security of critical facilities in the autonomous region.
The escalation coincides with the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, now in its twelfth day, heightening concerns that the Kurdistan Region could be drawn further into the widening regional confrontation.
