Barzani and Trump Envoy Discuss Attacks on Kurdistan Region, Stress Protection of Stability

Peregraf — Masoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), held a phone call on Thursday with Tom Barrack, the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria, to discuss recent attacks on the Kurdistan Region and the necessity of maintaining regional stability.

During the conversation, Barrack conveyed greetings from President Donald Trump to Barzani and discussed the Kurdish leader's role in security and stability during the current period of regional tension.

Barrack stated that the United States continues to regard the Kurdistan Region as a partner and noted that Washington intends to maintain coordination with the Kurdistan Regional authorities. He characterized Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as significant factors for stability in the Middle East, particularly given the current security environment.

The U.S. envoy also noted that Washington would continue its support for the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in addressing outstanding issues through dialogue.

Barzani expressed appreciation for the message and for Barrack’s ongoing engagement. He stated that the Kurdistan Region remains committed to regional stability and the principles of coexistence and dialogue.

During the call, Barzani also briefed the U.S. envoy on recent attacks carried out by armed groups against targets in the Kurdistan Region. These incidents occurred during the 13th day of the US-Israel war on Iran, which commenced on February 28, 2026.

Both sides agreed on the importance of insulating Iraq and the Kurdistan Region from the broader regional conflict to protect their security.
