Masoud Barzani Calls for Kurdish Unity in Nowruz Message Amid Rising Regional Tensions
Peregraf — Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has called for greater Kurdish unity and political coordination in his message marking Nowruz and the arrival of the Kurdish year 2726, stressing that current regional developments demand unprecedented cooperation among Kurdish forces.
In his statement, Barzani extended congratulations to the families of martyrs, Peshmerga forces, and Kurds worldwide, describing Nowruz as a historic symbol of renewal, resistance, and hope deeply rooted in Kurdish identity. He emphasized, however, that this year's occasion comes at a particularly sensitive time.
"This year, Nowruz arrives amidst significant changes, complexities, and tensions in our region and the world," Barzani said, adding that "the need is greater than ever for coordination and cooperation among political forces."
He urged Kurdish parties to set aside their differences and work collectively to protect national interests, strengthen stability, and safeguard the Kurdistan Region during a period of escalating uncertainty.
Barzani's call comes as the broader region faces mounting instability linked to the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran, now in its 21st day. The intensifying conflict has raised concerns about spillover effects, particularly in the Kurdistan Region.
According to follow-up reporting by Peregraf Media Foundation, approximately 400 drones and missiles struck various locations across the Kurdistan Region during the first two weeks of the conflict. The Kurdistan Region government has attributed the attacks either to Iran or to factions of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of groups operating in Iraq.
The scale and frequency of the reported attacks have heightened fears that the Kurdistan Region could be drawn deeper into an expanding regional confrontation.
"I hope that this year's Nowruz marks the beginning of greater cohesion and brotherhood among all political parties," Barzani said.
He concluded by wishing peace and stability for the peoples of the region, calling for a future free from war, tension, and unrest.
