Masoud Barzani Condemns 'Iranian Missile Strike' on Peshmerga Positions as 'Hostile and Unjustifiable'

Peregraf- Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), strongly condemned an Iranian ballistic missile attack carried out in the early hours of Tuesday against Peshmerga forces in the Soran district of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

"I strongly condemn the attack carried out early this morning with Iranian missiles against the headquarters of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces," Barzani said in a statement, adding that the assault "is hostile and carries no justification."

Barzani noted that the strike fits a pattern of repeated Iranian attacks against the Kurdistan Region, stating it was "one of several times that such attacks have been carried out," in disregard of "the principles of neighborliness and international law." He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region "has not been a part of the current conflict in the region and has never posed a threat to its neighbors."

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government's Ministry of Peshmerga, six Iranian ballistic missiles struck positions in the Soran district in two separate waves, targeting the headquarters of the 7th Infantry Division of Command Area One and a unit from the 5th Infantry Division. The attack killed six Peshmerga fighters and wounded approximately 30 others, making it one of the deadliest strikes on Kurdish forces since the US-Israeli war on Iran began on day one — February 28, 2026 — now in its 25th day.

Kurdistan Region authorities have condemned the attack as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty and the principles of good neighborliness, urging Baghdad and the international community to take decisive action to prevent further strikes. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from Kurdish leadership and heightened concern over the US-Israeli war on Iran spilling further into the Kurdistan Region.
