Peregraf — Iraq’s Ministerial Council for National Security held an emergency meeting Tuesday, March 24, 2026, to address a series of strikes targeting Iraqi security forces. The session took place on the 25th day of the Israel and US war against Iran, following an Iranian missile strike on Peshmerga positions in the Soran district of the Kurdistan Region that reportedly killed six fighters and wounded dozens.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani. During the session, the council reviewed the impact of the ongoing regional conflict on Iraq's internal security and reaffirmed that the federal government maintains exclusive constitutional authority over all decisions concerning war and peace.

According to Sabah al-Nu'man, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the council condemned all violations of Iraqi sovereignty. He stated that no entity would be permitted to act outside state authority and warned that violators would face legal consequences.

The emergency session followed claims from officials in the Kurdistan Region regarding an Iranian strike involving six ballistic missiles. According to these Kurdish reports, the missiles targeted the headquarters of the 1st Sector’s 7th Infantry Division and a unit of the 5th Infantry Division in the Soran area. The reports claimed that six Peshmerga members were killed and approximately 30 others were injured in the attack.

Simultaneously, the council addressed separate strikes targeting the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Anbar Province. Officials characterized these incidents, along with the Erbil strikes, as part of a broader pattern of aggression against Iraq’s security institutions during the Israel and US war against Iran. The council emphasized the necessity of protecting all components of Iraq’s defense system, including both the Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces, citing their roles in national security.

In response to these developments, the council announced measures to enhance defensive capabilities against missile and drone threats. It also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to file a formal complaint with the United Nations Security Council and to summon both the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires and the Iranian Ambassador to lodge official protests regarding the strikes on Iraqi positions.

The council concluded by reiterating Iraq's official stance of avoiding involvement in the wider regional conflict while maintaining balanced relations, warning that continued violations risk further destabilizing the country.
