Peregraf - The United States has “unequivocally and forcefully” condemned recent drone attacks targeting the private residence of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok, attributing the incidents to Iran-aligned groups operating in Iraq.

In a press statement, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Tommy Pigott said Washington “categorically rejects the indiscriminate and cowardly terrorist acts” carried out by what it described as “Iran’s terrorist militia proxies” in Iraq.

“These actions by Iran and its proxies are a direct assault on Iraq’s sovereignty, stability, and unity,” Pigott said.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions following a second drone attack within less than 24 hours targeting Barzani’s residence in Duhok, according to a source who spoke to Peregraf. Drones were still audible over the city at the time of reporting, raising concerns of an ongoing aerial threat.

The latest incident follows an earlier strike at approximately 11:16 AM on March 28, 2026, when security forces reportedly opened fire with heavy automatic weapons in an attempt to intercept an incoming drone before an explosion confirmed impact.

The escalation comes on the 29th day of the US–Israel War on Iran, which began on February 28, 2026. Data compiled by the Peregraf Media Foundation indicates that more than 500 drones and missiles have targeted locations across the Kurdistan Region since the start of the conflict.

According to the data, the attacks are attributed to either the Iranian military or the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an armed umbrella group operating in the country. The strikes have reportedly killed at least 13 people, including members of the Peshmerga forces, and wounded around 50 others.

A major escalation was recorded on March 24, when six Peshmerga fighters were killed in ballistic missile strikes in Erbil Province. The newly formed joint investigative committee is currently examining the latest Duhok attack, while no group has yet officially claimed responsibility.

The situation remains highly tense as security forces continue monitoring airspace over the Kurdistan Region.
