Kurdistan Region Endures Difficult Night Under Widespread Drone Attacks

Peregraf — The Kurdistan Region experienced a tense and volatile night as a wave of drone attacks struck multiple areas, including Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok, alongside several districts and sub-districts.

Among the main targets were the residence of KDP President Masoud Barzani in Erbil and the home of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok, the latter coming under attack for the second time in less than 24 hours.

Despite the scale and intensity of the attacks, no casualties have been officially reported. Security forces shot down a significant number of drones, including one targeting the residence of Masoud Barzani, although some strikes caused material damage.

Authorities in Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaymaniyah declared a public holiday on Sunday, suspending the planned resumption of schools, universities, and institutes. Educational institutions had been closed since March 4 amid escalating regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Speaking late Saturday, Barzani revealed that "our headquarters have been attacked five times" in recent days, noting that these incidents were deliberately kept undisclosed to avoid causing public anxiety and unrest. He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region, while not a party to the broader regional conflict, has nonetheless faced sustained attacks.

According to Barzani, hundreds of drones and missiles have targeted the Region and Peshmerga Forces positions, marking a dangerous escalation—particularly with repeated strikes on leadership sites. He warned that such actions pose a serious threat to the stability of the Kurdistan Region.

The latest developments follow an earlier drone strike on March 28 at approximately 11:16 AM, when security forces were seen firing heavy automatic weapons in an attempt to intercept an incoming drone before an explosion confirmed the impact.

Barzani described the attacks as a "grave injustice” and a "provocation for war,” calling on Iraqi authorities to take decisive measures against armed groups responsible for the strikes. He reaffirmed that the people of Kurdistan would continue to defend their rights, stressing that such attacks would not break their will.

The escalation comes on the 30th day of the ongoing regional war, which began on February 28, 2026. Data compiled by Peregraf Media Foundation indicates that more than 500 drones and missiles have targeted locations across the Kurdistan Region since the outbreak of hostilities. These operations have been attributed to either Iranian forces or the Islamic Resistance in Iraq.

According to Peregraf, at least 13 people—including Peshmerga personnel and security officers—have been killed, with approximately 50 others wounded. One of the deadliest incidents occurred on March 24, when six Peshmerga fighters were killed in ballistic missile strikes in Erbil Province.
