Peregraf — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani said security forces have successfully apprehended individuals involved in a deadly drone attack near Erbil that killed a French officer serving with the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

The announcement came during a phone call on Wednesday with French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders discussed regional developments and efforts to maintain a fragile ceasefire.

Al-Sudani highlighted what he described as a significant achievement by Iraqi security forces, emphasizing that those responsible for launching the drone strike targeting a coalition site had been tracked down and detained. The attack, which struck a location near Erbil hosting coalition personnel, resulted in the death of a French military officer, underscoring ongoing security challenges in Iraq despite broader stabilization efforts.

“The success in apprehending those involved reflects the state’s commitment to enforcing the law across all parts of Iraq,” al-Sudani said, according to a statement from his office.

The strike had raised concerns among international partners, particularly France, which maintains a role in the anti-ISIS coalition. Macron, during the call, expressed appreciation for Iraq’s efforts to pursue accountability and support regional stability.

Beyond the security developments, both leaders stressed the importance of sustaining the current ceasefire in the region, warning that renewed escalation could have wider global repercussions. They also addressed recent attacks in Lebanon, calling for an immediate halt to violence and the protection of civilians.

Al-Sudani reaffirmed Baghdad’s commitment to strengthening ties with Paris, particularly in security cooperation, while Macron praised Iraq’s role in promoting stability during a volatile period in the Middle East.

In a lighter moment, Macron also congratulated Iraq on qualifying for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, noting that Iraq and France are set to face each other after being drawn into the same group.

The call reflects ongoing coordination between Iraq and key international partners as Baghdad seeks to balance internal security challenges with broader diplomatic engagement.
