Nizar Amedi Receives PM Sudani, Discusses Government Formation as Pressure Mounts on Shia Alliance
Peregraf — Nizar Amedi, Iraq’s president, met in Baghdad with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani, as political attention turns to the formation of a new government and the nomination of a prime minister within a limited timeframe.
During the meeting, Sudani congratulated Amedi on his election, wishing him success in his duties. The president expressed his appreciation for the gesture.
Talks focused on the political process following the presidential election, with both sides stressing the need to complete constitutional steps and accelerate the formation of a new national government that represents all Iraqis.
Under Iraq’s political framework, the Shia-led Coordination Framework is expected to present its candidate for the position of prime minister within two weeks, as part of efforts to move forward with government formation.
Both leaders praised the role of political forces in completing the presidential election and emphasized the importance of cooperation to address current challenges, strengthen state institutions, and safeguard national sovereignty.
The meeting also addressed regional and international developments, with both sides calling for de-escalation and dialogue to resolve disputes, in support of broader stability in the region.
