U.S. Embassy Warns of New Iran-Linked Militia Attack Threats Across Iraq and Kurdistan Region

Peregraf — The U.S. Embassy Baghdad has issued a new security alert warning that Iraqi militias aligned with Iran continue to plan attacks against U.S. citizens and American-linked targets across Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

In its April 20 security notice, the embassy said “Iraqi terrorist militias aligned with Iran continue to plot additional attacks against U.S. citizens and targets associated with the United States throughout Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR).”

The statement added that some elements linked to the Iraqi government continue to provide political, financial, and operational cover for these groups.

The warning comes despite a two-week ceasefire following nearly 40 days of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, during which repeated drone and missile attacks targeted sites across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The embassy also noted that Iraqi airspace has reopened and limited commercial flights have resumed, but warned travelers of the continued risks posed by missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace.

U.S. citizens considering travel by air inside Iraq were urged to remain cautious due to the ongoing security threat.

The U.S. Mission in Iraq said it remains open under ordered departure status to assist American citizens, but advised them not to attempt to visit the embassy in Baghdad or the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil because of significant security risks.

The embassy also repeated its Level 4 travel advisory for Iraq, the highest warning level issued by the U.S. State Department.

“Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave now if you are there,” the statement said.

The warning highlights continuing regional instability as attacks by Iran-backed armed groups remain a major concern for U.S. officials and international observers.
