PAK Says Its Erbil Base Targeted in New Wave of Drone Attacks

Peregraf — Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) said its base in Darashakran, Erbil province, was targeted Thursday night in what it described as a new wave of drone attacks.

Earlier the same evening, two additional drones struck separate locations near the Rizgari and Basirma sub-districts in Erbil province, causing material damage but no reported casualties.

PAK is part of an alliance of six Kurdish opposition groups formed in February to coordinate efforts against the Islamic Republic of Iran, with the stated goal of advancing Kurdish self-determination.

The latest strike comes just days after PAK said Iran attacked another one of its headquarters on April 22 using four drones and missiles, wounding three Peshmerga members.

In that earlier attack, PAK said the strike hit a headquarters of the Kurdistan National Army at 1:24 a.m., only two hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Tehran.

The party said three of its fighters were wounded in that attack.

PAK strongly criticized both Iran and the United States afterward, saying the Kurdistan Region remains the only territory where Tehran continues to violate the ceasefire through repeated drone and missile strikes.

"The United States cannot consider the Kurds its friends and partners during times of war and operations against terrorists, and President Donald Trump cannot express love for the Kurds and Peshmerga, only to remain a mere spectator during times of peace and ceasefire while Tehran and its subordinate Iraqi groups launch attacks against them," the party said.

PAK also stated that those targeted were veterans of the war against ISIS and had played key roles in defending Erbil during the October 2017 confrontation involving Iran’s Quds Force and the Popular Mobilization Forces.

The attack adds to a growing number of drone and missile strikes targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and Peshmerga positions across the Kurdistan Region despite the declared U.S.-Iran ceasefire.

According to Peregraf records, at least 20 people have been killed and around 100 wounded in Iranian and Iran-backed Iraqi militia attacks across the Kurdistan Region since the escalation began.
