Peregraf — A widespread dust storm hit Iraq and the Kurdistan Region on Sunday, sending more than 1,100 people to hospitals with breathing difficulties, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Health.
Ministry spokesperson Saif al-Badr said 1,133 cases of suffocation were recorded across several provinces, stressing that no deaths have been reported.
He noted that most cases were mild to moderate and that the majority of patients were discharged after receiving treatment.
Most Affected Provinces
The highest number of cases was recorded in:
Al-Muthanna Governorate: 576 cases
Najaf: 300 cases
Baghdad: 200 cases
Health authorities confirmed that all patients received necessary emergency care and follow-up treatment.
The Iraqi General Authority for Meteorology warned that dusty conditions are expected to persist, particularly in central and southwestern regions.
According to forecasts:
Moderate to dense dust will continue in central and southwestern areas, gradually easing during the day
Light to moderate dust will affect other regions
Winds will be northwesterly, with gusts reaching up to 50 km/h, contributing to rising dust levels
Temperatures are expected to drop in central and northern areas
The authority also indicated chances of scattered thunderstorms in parts of northern and central Iraq, especially during nighttime hours.

Dust storms are a recurring seasonal hazard in Iraq, often causing respiratory distress, especially among vulnerable groups.
Authorities urged residents to limit outdoor activity, use protective masks, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
