Peregraf — Iraqi and Iranian officials discussed the activities of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region during a meeting of the Iraqi–Iranian Higher Security Committee held in Baghdad on Sunday.

According to a statement from the office of Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, the Iranian side presented information regarding the activities of “certain Iranian armed groups” operating from the Kurdistan Region.

The two sides agreed to continue coordination and take what they described as necessary measures to prevent activities that could threaten regional security and stability.

Focus on Border Security and Regional Stability

The meeting included senior security officials from both Iraq and Iran and focused on implementing the security agreement between the two countries, as well as discussing regional security developments.

Both sides emphasized strengthening joint security coordination, tightening border controls, and preventing infiltration or movements by armed groups.

Iraq Reaffirms Position

Qasim al-Araji reiterated Iraq’s position rejecting the use of Iraqi territory as a launch point for attacks against neighboring countries.

He said Baghdad remains committed to preventing any group or entity from using Iraqi territory to threaten neighboring states, stressing the importance of regional stability, sovereignty, and good neighborly relations.

Iran has repeatedly accused Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region of carrying out cross-border activities against Iran.

In recent years, Tehran has launched multiple missile and drone attacks targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition bases in the Kurdistan Region, particularly following periods of unrest inside Iran.

Baghdad and Tehran signed a joint security agreement in 2023 aimed at tightening border security and regulating the presence of Iranian Kurdish armed groups near the frontier.
