Iraqi PM Directs Efforts to Increase Oil Exports and Diversify Export Routes Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis
Peregraf- Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi on Wednesday directed Iraqi officials to intensify efforts to increase oil export volumes and diversify export routes amid disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the suspension of some oil exports.
Al-Zaidi made the remarks during a visit to Iraq's Ministry of Oil headquarters in Baghdad, where he chaired a meeting with senior ministry officials. Those in attendance included Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein, and the prime minister's chief of staff.
Focus on Export Alternatives
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Media Office, the meeting reviewed the impact of the Strait of Hormuz crisis on Iraq's oil sector and measures being taken to address export disruptions.
Discussions focused on increasing oil export volumes and identifying alternative export outlets to reduce dependence on vulnerable routes.
Officials also reviewed mechanisms for implementing cabinet decisions related to oil exports and examined agreements with neighboring countries regarding the overland export of Iraqi oil.
Foreign Ministry Role
The statement said the Foreign Ministry has been tasked with following up on agreements signed with neighboring states to facilitate alternative export channels.
Iraq relies heavily on Gulf shipping routes for crude exports, making the Strait of Hormuz a critical passage for the country's economy.
Gas Projects Also Discussed
The meeting additionally reviewed associated gas projects and challenges affecting their implementation.
Iraq has been working in recent years to expand gas investment projects and reduce gas flaring as part of broader energy sector reforms.
