Peregraf — The Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) said Iranian forces attacked the party's bases in Erbil province with at least four missiles and explosive drones, wounding nine Peshmerga fighters. According to the party, four of the wounded fighters remain in critical condition.
The attack is the latest in a continuing wave of Iranian strikes targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region following the ceasefire in the US-Israel war on Iran announced on April 8.
Hundreds of Attacks Since February
Attacks by Iran and Iran-backed Iraqi armed factions against Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations in the Kurdistan Region have continued for months despite the ceasefire. According to figures released by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the Kurdistan Region recorded 809 drone and missile attacks between February 28 and April 20. The attacks reportedly caused 20 deaths and 123 injuries. The strikes have targeted civilian areas, infrastructure, Peshmerga forces, security personnel, and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the region.
Security Concerns Intensify
Repeated attacks on camps and bases linked to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups have intensified concerns over civilian safety and regional stability in the Kurdistan Region. Iran has repeatedly accused Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations based in Iraq's Kurdistan Region of threatening Iranian national security, allegations the groups deny.
Baghdad and Erbil Preparing Delegation to Iran
The latest attack comes one day after Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji in Baghdad to discuss the continuing drone attacks. Following the meeting, al-Araji announced that a joint security delegation from Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region would soon visit Iran to discuss the issue.
"We discussed the attacks on the Kurdistan Region, and a joint security delegation from Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region will soon visit Iran," al-Araji said.
Barzani stated that ongoing discussions with Iraqi authorities aim to "eliminate those threats that exist against the Kurdistan Region and all of Iraq."
