Iraqi State Media Names MPs, Senior Officials Arrested in Expanding Oil Ministry Corruption Case

Peregraf — Iraqi state media on Sunday published the names of several members of parliament and senior government officials reportedly arrested as part of an expanding corruption investigation linked to former Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan al-Jumaili.

According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the arrests were carried out based on confessions made by al-Jumaili during the ongoing investigation.

Citing high-level sources, INA reported that those arrested include: 

  • Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azm Coalition and member of parliament
  • Ziyad al-Janabi, member of parliament
  • Bahaa al-Nouri, member of parliament
  • Muhammad al-Karbouli, member of parliament
  • Alia Nassif, member of parliament
  • Muhammad Jamil al-Mayahi, member of parliament
  • Hassan al-Khafaji, member of parliament
  • Abdul Rahman al-Luwayzi, member of parliament
  • Mudar al-Karwi, member of parliament
  • Hind al-Abassi, member of parliament
  • Muhammad Farman al-Jubouri, member of parliament
  • Bushra al-Qaisi, member of parliament
  • Muhammad al-Sayhud, former member of parliament
  • Ali Maaraj, Deputy Oil Minister for Distribution Affairs
  • Ibrahim al-Sumaidaie

Earlier Sunday, Iraqi authorities launched a large-scale anti-corruption operation across Baghdad.

The arrests come as Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council continues to expand its investigation into one of the country’s largest recent corruption cases.

Judicial authorities previously announced that investigators had recovered more than 98 billion Iraqi dinars and $11 million in cash linked to the case, in addition to confiscating 70 properties, 21 vehicles, and approximately 3 kilograms of gold.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Iraqi authorities have indicated that additional legal measures and arrests could follow as they continue pursuing individuals implicated in the case.
