Peregraf — Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi vowed on Saturday that his government would continue its anti-corruption campaign despite mounting challenges and political pressure, describing the effort as a national battle to protect public funds and the rule of law.
“Our government is proceeding, with utmost steadfastness and resolve, in pursuing the corrupt, reclaiming state rights, and solidifying a state of institutions and justice,” al-Zaidi wrote in a post on X.
“We will not back down from this approach, no matter how great the challenges or how immense the pressures become,” he added.
Al-Zaidi thanked the Iraqi people for supporting what he described as the government’s reform path and expressed appreciation to the Iraqi Parliament, the Supreme Judicial Council, Iraq’s senior Shiite religious authorities (Maraji’), and National Shia Movement leader Muqtada al-Sadr.
He also thanked the Coordination Framework, the National Political Council, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), security and oversight institutions, tribal leaders, religious figures, journalists, and media organizations for supporting the anti-corruption campaign.
“This broad national alignment confirms that the fight against corruption is not merely a government battle, but rather the battle of an entire nation,” al-Zaidi said. “Everyone is united to defend public funds, the rule of law, and the future of Iraq.”
The statement comes as Iraqi authorities continue a sweeping anti-corruption campaign centered on former Deputy Oil Minister for Refining Affairs Adnan al-Jumaili. The investigation has expanded to include numerous members of parliament and senior government officials.
The broader investigation has already resulted in the arrest of dozens of MPs and senior officials since June 28, with judicial authorities saying additional arrests and legal measures are expected as the corruption probe continues.
