Peregraf — The Iraqi federal government has allocated more than $100 million to support the Kurdistan Region's health sector, with most of the funding dedicated to dialysis treatment, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Health Minister Saman Barzanji announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, Barzanji said the funding agreement was reached during a recent visit by KRG officials to Baghdad.
"Our recent visit to the capital, Baghdad, resulted in an agreement to allocate more than $100 million to the health sector in the region," he said.
According to Barzanji, the majority of the funds will be used to support dialysis patients, while the remainder will finance health projects across different parts of the Kurdistan Region.
He said the allocation comes as the KRG Ministry of Health faces significant financial pressure, with monthly expenditures reaching billions of Iraqi dinars, particularly for medicines used to treat chronic illnesses and cancer.
Barzanji noted that more than 3,000 kidney failure patients currently depend on dialysis treatment in the Kurdistan Region, describing their care as one of the ministry's most significant humanitarian and medical challenges.
He said the new funding will help secure essential treatment and reduce the financial burden of providing dialysis services.
