Peregraf- Dana Gas announced on Thursday that it has temporarily suspended production at the Khor Mor gas field in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, citing security threats and escalating regional tensions.
"Due to security threats and escalating tensions in the region, we have temporarily suspended our production at Khor Mor," the company said in a statement.
Dana Gas said it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), authorities in Sulaymaniyah, and the Iraqi federal government.
"Our company is monitoring the situation in cooperation with the institutions and agencies of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Sulaymaniyah and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the Iraqi federal government," the statement said.
Shortly after the announcement, the KRG Ministry of Electricity said the disruption at Khor Mor had significantly affected electricity generation across the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement, the ministry said that gas supplies to power plants had declined because of the security situation at the Khor Mor field, reducing electricity generation by approximately 2,500 megawatts.
The ministry described the disruption as temporary and said all relevant authorities were working to restore gas supplies to electricity generation stations as quickly as possible.
"We inform electricity consumers that this situation is temporary; all relevant parties are working together to resume the supply of gas to the power generation stations," the ministry said.
The Khor Mor field, located in the Chamchamal district of Sulaymaniyah province, is one of the Kurdistan Region's most strategically important energy facilities. Operated by Dana Gas together with its partner Crescent Petroleum through the Pearl Petroleum consortium, the field supplies natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian.
Any prolonged disruption in production could immediately affect electricity generation across the Kurdistan Region, impacting millions of residents and increasing pressure on both the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi federal government.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional security tensions and follows a series of drone attacks targeting infrastructure across the Kurdistan Region in recent days.
