Peregraf — Iraq and Syria have agreed to advance the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Iraq-Syria crude oil pipeline, identifying it as a priority infrastructure project aimed at restoring a strategic energy corridor linking Iraqi oil production to Mediterranean export markets.
According to a statement from the U.S. Department of State, the two governments intend to work jointly to rehabilitate and operate the pipeline, establish the necessary legal framework, and cooperate with an international consortium overseeing the project.
Once rehabilitated, the pipeline is expected to have an initial transport capacity of 2 million barrels of crude oil per day.
The United States welcomed the agreement, saying it supports the participation of a U.S.-led international consortium that will carry out the project’s technical and financial implementation.
The State Department described the initiative as “an important milestone” for both the region and Iraq-Syria relations, saying the project would help strengthen regional security and stability through economic development.
The department added that the agreement reflects both governments’ commitment to restoring a critical regional energy corridor connecting Iraqi oil fields with Mediterranean export markets.
