PM al-Zaidi Orders Investigation Into Saudi Claims of Drone Strikes Launched From Iraq

Peregraf - Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ali Faleh al-Zaidi directed relevant security agencies on Monday to investigate claims made by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense that the kingdom was targeted by drones launched from Iraqi territory, according to information provided by the Saudi side.

Saudi Defense Ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki said in a statement that the kingdom's air defenses had intercepted and destroyed a number of drones in recent hours. He said the drones had attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province and in Riyadh.

Al-Malki said the attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and were carried out by groups he described as "terrorist militias affiliated with Iran." He affirmed the kingdom's right to defend itself and its assets, and said Saudi Arabia reserves the right to respond at a time and place of its choosing.

In a statement posted by the Prime Minister's Media Office, armed forces spokesperson Sabah al-Numan said the Iraqi government affirms its constitutional and steadfast commitment to the principles of good neighborliness, and to preventing Iraqi territory from being used as a route or launching point for any attack targeting brotherly or friendly nations. He said the government is examining the available evidence and information and will take legal action against anyone found responsible, based on the outcome of the investigation.

Al-Numan added that Iraq's relations with Saudi Arabia are deep and firmly rooted in mutual respect, shared interests, and good neighborliness, and that Iraq would not allow any attempt to damage or undermine that relationship. He said the government would continue working firmly to protect Iraq's security, reinforce its sovereignty, and preserve the security and stability of its Arab and regional surroundings.
