Peregraf — The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil on Saturday issued a new security alert, warning U.S. citizens in Iraq and across the Middle East to remain vigilant as regional tensions continue to rise.
“Due to escalating tensions in the Middle East region, the security situation remains complex, with the potential for unexpected escalation,” the embassy said in the alert dated August 1, 2026.
The mission urged U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution, monitor developments closely, and prepare for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and travel disruptions. It also advised Americans to consider leaving the region or be prepared to depart if the security situation deteriorates further.
The warning comes as the US-Iran war continues to intensify following the collapse of a ceasefire in early July. In recent weeks, the conflict has expanded across the region, with repeated U.S. strikes on Iranian and Iran-aligned targets, Iranian missile and drone attacks, and military exchanges involving several countries.
The alert also follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest warning that the United States would respond forcefully to any further attacks by Iran or its allied groups on American personnel or interests in the region, amid continued military operations and heightened regional instability.
The renewed warning comes after multiple drone and missile attacks in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in recent weeks, including strikes targeting military positions and energy infrastructure, prompting temporary airspace restrictions and disruptions to commercial flights.
