Ahmed al-Sharaa, Mazloum Abdi Discuss Implementing January Agreement, SDF Integration

Peregraf — Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi on Tuesday at the People’s Palace in Damascus to discuss the implementation of their January 29 agreement and the integration of SDF institutions into the Syrian state.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani and Deir ez-Zor Governor Ziad al-Ayesh, according to the Syrian presidency.

The two sides reviewed progress on implementing the January agreement and discussed follow-up steps for integrating SDF structures into Syrian state institutions.

The meeting comes months after Damascus and the SDF signed a landmark agreement on January 29, aimed at ending years of parallel administration in northeast Syria.

Under the agreement, the SDF agreed in principle to integrate its military and civilian institutions into the Syrian state, while Damascus committed to recognizing the rights of Syria’s Kurdish community and ensuring the participation of residents of northeast Syria in state institutions. The deal also envisioned the gradual return of Syrian government institutions to SDF-held areas, coordination over border crossings, oil and gas fields, airports, and prisons, and the formation of joint committees to oversee implementation.

Despite the breakthrough, implementation has proceeded slowly, with both sides continuing negotiations over security arrangements, governance, and the future status of SDF-controlled territories.
