Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Masoud Pezeshkian, the first Iranian president to visit the Kurdistan Region, expressed his desire to resolve all outstanding issues during a meeting with senior officials in Erbil today.
"We share a common vision and a common history with our brothers in the Kurdistan Region. Our visit aims to strengthen relations and address the challenges that have persisted," Pezeshkian told reporters after the meeting.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani hailed the visit as a significant milestone. "We have always supported each other during difficult times. The arrival of the first Iranian president in Erbil is a historic occasion," Barzani remarked.
Pezeshkian arrived in Erbil this morning from Baghdad, where he held meetings with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the presidency. He was later welcomed by Masoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), during which the two leaders discussed the current situation in Iraq and the region. They emphasized the importance of cooperation in political, economic, and cultural sectors between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Barzani's office issued a statement following the meeting: "They exchanged views on the general situation in Iraq and the region, and emphasized the need for coordination and development of relations in various fields."
During the visit, Masoud Pezeshkian extended an official invitation to Masoud Barzani to visit Iran.
Following his engagements in Erbil, Pezeshkian is expected to travel to Sulaimani, where he will meet with Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and pay tribute to the late former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani by laying a wreath at his grave.
