The Iraqi government has issued a formal protest to the United Nations Secretary-General and the Security Council, condemning what it describes as a “blatant violation” of Iraqi airspace by Israel. Iraqi authorities claim that Israeli forces used Iraqi airspace to conduct a military strike against the Islamic Republic of Iran on October 26.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the issue with the United States, emphasizing the bilateral Strategic Framework Agreement and the U.S.’s commitment to uphold Iraq’s security and sovereignty. This diplomatic outreach underscores Iraq’s stance on safeguarding its territorial integrity and preventing the exploitation of its airspace for hostilities against neighboring states.

“The government will not allow Iraqi land or airspace to be used for aggression against other countries,” stated Basim Alawadi, spokesperson for the Iraqi government. Alawadi added that Iraq’s position reflects a broader commitment to regional stability, advocating for peaceful conflict resolution through diplomatic means.

The incident follows Israel’s first open strike on Iran, as regional tensions escalate. In an operation reportedly codenamed Days of Repentance, Israeli forces targeted Iran’s air defenses, radar sites, and missile production facilities. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that over 100 jets and drones participated in the mission, which was conducted in two waves and aimed at weakening Iran’s defensive and offensive capabilities.

Iranian authorities, responding to the strike, initially downplayed the incident but warned that attacks on critical infrastructure, including nuclear and energy facilities, would constitute a “red line.” In the wake of the airstrike, Iran’s Supreme Leader indicated that military leaders would decide on an appropriate response. Western leaders, concerned about the potential impact on regional stability and global energy markets, had previously urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid targeting critical infrastructure in response to an Iranian missile attack on Tel Aviv on October 1.

With this latest incident, Iraq’s call for accountability from the U.S. underscores Baghdad’s dedication to protecting its sovereignty while seeking to avoid further escalation in the Middle East.
