Iraq Rejects Israel’s Complaint to the Security Council, Reaffirms Commitment to International Law

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, chaired an emergency meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security to discuss recent developments surrounding Israel’s complaint against Iraq, submitted to the United Nations Security Council.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Council categorically rejected the complaint, describing it as “a pretext aimed at justifying a planned act of aggression against Iraq.” The Council reiterated the Iraqi government’s firm position that “the authority to decide on matters of peace and war is the exclusive prerogative of the Iraqi government.” It further emphasized that strict measures are being taken to prevent the use of Iraqi territory for launching any attacks.

A Dangerous Escalation

The Council’s statement labeled the allegations made by Israeli authorities as “a dangerous escalation and an attempt to manipulate international public opinion to justify aggression.” It warned of the potential repercussions for regional stability and reaffirmed Iraq’s adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter. The Council urged all international actors to reject escalation and prioritize dialogue.

Calls for Unified Action

The Council called on the UN Security Council to examine the complaints previously submitted by Iraq against Israeli authorities and to adopt deterrent measures to promote regional and global peace. Additionally, it appealed to the League of Arab States to take a unified stance against threats posed by the occupying entity, including practical steps based on the principle of collective defense.

As part of its diplomatic efforts, the Council tasked the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs with actively pursuing the case in international forums and taking necessary steps to deter aggressive threats in accordance with international law.

During the meeting, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani issued several security directives aimed at strengthening Iraq’s defense and addressing potential threats:

Strengthening Iraq’s western borderswith increased activity and rapid deployment to establish a secure depth.

Providing enhanced air defensefor Iraqi territory and critical infrastructure.

Monitoring hostile activityby air or ground and pursuing those responsible to prevent any security breaches.

Activating emergency response plansand ensuring adequate security measures to confront potential threats.

The Council underscored Iraq’s key role in supporting nations under attack, fulfilling its legal and moral obligations to provide humanitarian, political, and legal assistance. These efforts, the Council stressed, contribute to fostering stability across the region.
