The first session of the sixth term of the Kurdistan Parliament commenced today, with Mohammed Sulaiman, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the New Generation Movement (NGM) and the oldest MP, presiding over the meeting. As part of the session, newly elected MPs were sworn into office.
According to parliamentary procedures, the leadership of the parliament must be elected during the first session. However, disagreements among political factions have left the session open-ended, with no consensus reached on the presidency.
All political blocs were represented in the session except for two MPs from the Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal), whose party decided to boycott the parliament. However, Hero Attar, a Komal MP from the Sulaymaniyah constituency, defied the party's decision and attended the session.
In response, Komal issued a statement condemning Attar's participation, citing reasons for the boycott, including alleged electoral fraud and manipulation of votes and seats by several parties. Komal described the current parliament as a "designed parliament" and announced Hero Attar's expulsion from the party.
"We have decided not to participate in the parliament because of fraud and the manipulation of votes and seats. We will not be part of this designed parliament," Komal said in its statement.
