Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Qubad Talabani, has warned that the escalating conflict in Syria poses a serious threat to the stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

During discussions with the Russian Ambassador to Iraq, Albrus Kutrashev, and the Italian Ambassador to Iraq, Nicola Fontaia, Talabani highlighted the dangers posed by regional instability and the potential revival of terrorist organizations. He remarked, “The escalating tensions in the region, particularly the ongoing situation in Syria, pose a significant threat that could activate dormant terrorist cells, jeopardizing the stability of both Iraq and Kurdistan.”

He also called on Kurdish political parties to intensify efforts to form a strong, fair government capable of addressing financial and service challenges faced by the Kurdish people.

Iraq Reinforces Borders as Syrian Conflict Escalates

Amid the intensifying violence in Syria, Iraq has bolstered troop deployments along its border and closed all crossings to prevent a spillover. The measures come as Syrian opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed factions, achieve significant territorial gains in Aleppo, Idlib and Hama provinces.

The opposition has captured Aleppo’s airport, key military sites, and numerous towns in a swift offensive, marking the most substantial challenge to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime since Russia’s intervention in 2015. The rebel advances have disrupted government supply lines and highlighted the weakening control of Assad’s forces, especially as Russia and Iran, his key allies, face their own geopolitical distractions.

The escalating conflict has raised fears across the region, with Iraq’s decision to close its borders reflecting broader concerns. Analysts warn that the renewed violence in Syria could destabilize neighboring countries, including Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as they brace for potential repercussions from the ongoing turmoil.
