The resurgence of the ISIS terrorist organization is raising alarm among international leaders following the collapse of the Syrian regime and the abandonment of weapon depots by the Syrian army. Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein emphasized the gravity of the situation during a phone call with British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Hamish Falconer on December 19, 2024.

Minister Hussein warned that ISIS has been reorganizing its forces and seizing weapons left behind by the Syrian army, enabling the group to expand its control over strategic areas. He also expressed concern over the potential escape of ISIS detainees from prisons and the deteriorating conditions in the Al-Hawl camp, which houses thousands of individuals with suspected ties to the organization. These developments, he noted, pose a direct threat to the security of both Syria and Iraq.

The Minister highlighted the need for a Syrian political solution that includes representation of all components of Syrian society. He also called for sustained international aid to address the humanitarian crisis and bolster stability in the region.

Meanwhile, a U.S. delegation met with the leadership of Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Damascus today, discussing the urgency of combating ISIS. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the meeting aimed to support a comprehensive political process that leads to the establishment of a government representing all Syrians while ensuring the fight against ISIS remains a priority. The U.S. Embassy in Syria reiterated the importance of forming a government that respects the rights of all citizens.

In a significant counterterrorism effort, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted a precision airstrike on December 19 in Dayr az Zawr Province, targeting ISIS leader Abu Yusif, also known as Mahmud. The operation resulted in the deaths of Abu Yusif and another ISIS operative. CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla reaffirmed the United States' commitment to preventing ISIS from exploiting the current instability in Syria.

"ISIS has the intent to break out the over 8,000 operatives currently detained in Syria. We will aggressively target these leaders and operatives," said Gen. Kurilla, emphasizing that the U.S., in partnership with allies, will continue efforts to degrade ISIS's capabilities and safeguard regional and global security.

As the situation in Syria remains volatile, international collaboration is deemed crucial to address the escalating threat posed by ISIS and ensure a sustainable path toward peace and security in the region.
