An Iraqi security and intelligence delegation, led by the head of the Iraqi Intelligence Agency, Hamid Shatri, has arrived in Damascus to hold talks with Syrian de facto President Ahmed Shara.
According to Iraqi government spokesperson Bassem Awadi, the high-level meeting focused on bolstering security and ensuring stability along the shared border between Iraq and Syria. "The delegation discussed the security and stability of the borders between Iraq and Syria," Awadi stated, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in addressing mutual concerns.
The meeting comes amid significant geopolitical shifts in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime at the hands of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which now controls large swaths of territory. The power vacuum left by the regime's collapse has intensified the threat of a resurgence of ISIS, which continues to exploit the instability in Syria and Iraq.
The border region remains a critical flashpoint for security operations, as both nations seek to counteract the influence of extremist groups and prevent cross-border attacks. This cooperation highlights the urgent need for unified efforts to stabilize the region and address the complex challenges posed by the ongoing conflict and its aftermath.
