The Iraqi President, the Head of the Supreme Judicial Council, and the Speaker of Parliament convened to discuss preparations for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections.
“The meeting focused on the preparations for the 2025 parliamentary elections, emphasizing the importance of providing logistical and technical support to the Independent High Election Commission (IHEC),” the Presidency stated.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced today an extension of the IHEC’s term for two years, from January 7, 2025, to January 6, 2027.
Earlier, the Iraqi Parliament had scheduled a session for January 5, 2025, to discuss the extension of the IHEC’s mandate but failed to convene or provide an explanation for the delay. The purpose of extending the commission’s mandate is to ensure it can oversee the sixth round of parliamentary elections scheduled for later this year.
Previously, on May 22, 2024, the Parliament unanimously approved a six-month extension of the IHEC’s mandate to supervise the October 20, 2024, Kurdistan parliamentary elections. That extension expired on January 7, 2025.
Iraq’s last parliamentary elections were held on October 10, 2021, with the current parliament beginning its term on January 9, 2022. According to the Iraqi constitution, new elections must be held 45 days before the end of the current four-year term, requiring the next vote to occur by November 25, 2025.
