The Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masoud Barzani, hosted Mazlum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), at his headquarters in Pirmam on Thursday evening. The meeting marked a significant effort to address the challenges and opportunities facing the Kurdish political landscape in Syria.

Focus on Unity and Dialogue

The discussions centered on the evolving situation in Syria, particularly the latest political and security developments. Both leaders emphasized the importance of fostering Kurdish unity as a critical tool for navigating these challenges effectively. A statement issued after the meeting highlighted the need for Kurdish political parties in Syria to determine their future independently, through dialogue and peaceful means.

The statement further stressed the necessity of unity and cooperation among Kurdish factions to safeguard their rights and play a constructive role in shaping Syria’s political future. Barzani and Abdi reaffirmed that collaboration among Kurdish parties is essential for achieving peace, stability, and mutual understanding with Syria’s emerging leadership.

A Step Towards Strengthening Kurdish Position

Hoshyar Zebari, a member of the KDP Politburo, described the meeting on X as a pivotal step toward strengthening Kurdish unity. He wrote, “Today’s meeting in Erbil between President Masoud Barzani and SDF Commander of N.E. Syria is a significant achievement to strengthen Kurdish unity and position vis-a-vis the new Syrian rulers in Damascus for a smooth political transition.”

The meeting follows Barzani’s continued efforts to promote unity among Syrian Kurdish factions. Earlier this month, he met with a delegation from the Syrian Kurdish National Council (ENKS), advocating for dialogue and peaceful measures to resolve disputes.

Context of the Meeting

Mazlum Abdi, who has consistently referred to Kurdish unity as a “historical necessity,” had previously met with Barzani’s representative, Hamid Darbandi, on January 13. These discussions laid the groundwork for the Erbil meeting, focusing on strengthening alliances among Kurdish factions and addressing shared challenges ahead of a possible political transition in Syria.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of a critical juncture in the Syrian conflict. Kurdish regions in Syria face both opportunities for greater autonomy and risks of division. Disagreements among Kurdish factions over political ideologies and alliances have long complicated efforts to present a united front.

A Turning Point for Syrian Kurds

Barzani’s outreach to both the SDF and ENKS reflects a broader strategy to solidify the Kurdish position in negotiations with Syrian current ruling groups and international stakeholders. However, challenges such as external pressures from Turkey and internal divisions remain significant obstacles.

As Syria approached a post-Assad era, the ability of Kurdish leaders to unify their ranks will be crucial in shaping the future of Kurdish-majority regions. A united Kurdish bloc could advocate for federalism, minority rights, and autonomy, while ongoing disunity risks sidelining their aspirations.

This meeting between Barzani and Abdi is seen as a critical step toward bridging divides and presenting a cohesive vision for the Kurdish future in Syria.
