Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has reiterated the importance of Peshmerga unification, urging the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to fully support the reform process. Speaking at the inauguration of the 3rd and 4th Infantry Divisions of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, Barzani stressed that overcoming political divisions is crucial for building a national military force.
The event, held at the Kurdistan Region Presidency in Erbil, was attended by senior officials, international representatives, and Major General Kevin Leahy, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. Barzani acknowledged international coalition support in training, equipping, and integrating Peshmerga forces but emphasized that true success depends on internal unity.
Despite progress, challenges remain, with divisions still affecting the Peshmerga’s structure. Barzani called on the Iraqi federal government to fulfill its constitutional obligations toward the Peshmerga. Meanwhile, he urged political parties to facilitate the formation of a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet to address ongoing governance and security issues.
For the past eight years, the Kurdistan Region has pursued the ambitious goal of unifying and professionalizing its Peshmerga forces. This effort, supported by international partners such as the United States and coalition forces, aims to create a politically neutral and professional military force. However, progress has been slow due to political friction between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
Despite these challenges, Kurdish leaders remain committed to achieving full unification, with strong support from international allies providing training, resources, and strategic advice. The reform initiative is seen as critical for the future stability and security of the Kurdistan Region.
The unification of the Peshmerga forces will not only strengthen the region’s defense capabilities but also promote long-term peace and prosperity by ensuring the military serves all Kurdish citizens rather than partisan interests. As the Kurdistan Region continues to navigate complex political and security challenges, the establishment of a unified Kurdish army marks a pivotal step towards safeguarding its future.
