The U.S. Department of State announced plans to inaugurate its new consulate building in Erbil next month, which will be the largest U.S. consulate facility worldwide.
During a press conference, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized that the opening of the consulate underscores the deepening friendship and strategic partnership between the United States and the Kurdistan Region.
"This new consulate reflects our enduring commitment to the people of the Kurdistan Region and our shared goals of stability, prosperity, and democratic governance," Bruce stated.
The expanded consulate signifies Washington's growing diplomatic engagement in the region, reinforcing economic, cultural, and security cooperation. The facility is expected to enhance consular services for U.S. citizens, streamline visa processing for Kurdish travelers, and facilitate stronger trade and investment ties.
Addressing the ongoing formation talks of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) tenth cabinet, Bruce reiterated U.S. support for an inclusive and efficient government.
"The formation of a representative government is in the interest of regional stability," she said. "We encourage all parties to expedite the process and ensure that the new cabinet is formed as soon as possible."
The U.S. has long been a key ally of the Kurdistan Region, providing military support in the fight against ISIS and advocating for Kurdish rights within Iraq’s federal framework. The consulate’s expansion aligns with broader U.S. strategic interests in fostering a stable and prosperous Middle East.
The new consulate, set to open next month, will serve as a hub for diplomatic and developmental activities, further solidifying the U.S.-Kurdistan partnership. As Erbil continues to grow as a key political and economic center in Iraq, the upgraded U.S. diplomatic presence highlights the city’s strategic importance on the global stage.
