In a joint statement, the Ministries of Electricity and Natural Resources of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced, "In preparation for the upcoming summer season, the Dana Gas Company has begun maintenance and repair operations in the Khor Mor gas field."
According to the statement, the process commenced at 12:00 tonight and is expected to last for three weeks.
The Ministry of Electricity, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and Dana Gas Company will maintain "close coordination to ensure the successful completion of this process."
The KRG ministries stated, "It is anticipated that through the implementation of this maintenance process, the level of electricity services during the summer season will significantly improve."
The joint statement from both ministries follows today's announcement by Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum, the companies operating in the Khor Mor field in Chamchamal, regarding an increase in natural gas production to 525 million standard cubic feet per day.
The companies reported that they have achieved this production level since the beginning of March this year, describing it as a "significant achievement," marking a 75% increase compared to 2017 production levels.
Additionally, condensate gas production in the Khor Mor field has risen to 15,200 barrels per day, while daily liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production has reached 1,070 tons.
According to Dana Gas, the company has invested over $3.5 billion in the Kurdistan Region, creating 20,000 direct and indirect job opportunities.
The company also noted that the Khor Mor field development project, which aims to increase production by 50%, has seen substantial progress and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year.
Khor Mor is the largest gas field in the Kurdistan Region. Dana Gas, which operates in Khor Mor, has secured a $250 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to expand and enhance gas production at the field.
Over the past two years, Khor Mor has been targeted in multiple missile and drone attacks, with the perpetrators and motives behind these assaults remaining officially undisclosed. On April 26, 2024, the field was attacked by two drones, resulting in the deaths of four Yemeni workers.
Khor Mor supplies natural gas to power stations in Erbil, Chamchamal, and Bazian, which are among the primary sources of electricity generation, in addition to providing household gas.
